Taliban should lay down arms on Eid and express commitment for peace process: US Embassy

KABUL: The US Embassy in Afghanistan has issued a statement on behalf of all foreign missions in the country.
A statement from the US Embassy said, “We condemn the ongoing violence in Afghanistan, call for an immediate end to the Taliban violence, and seek a peaceful political solution to the Taliban’s violence.”
The US embassy says the Taliban’s violent actions contradict its claim to support a peaceful solution, and that the Taliban’s violent actions are also against the Doha peace process.
The US embassy statement added that there were credible reports of women’s rights being violated in Taliban-held areas, as well as the closure of media organizations in those areas.
According to the statement, progress in peace in Afghanistan can only be sustained by the parties working together, the Taliban and all parties should immediately stop the violence and the parties should agree on a permanent, comprehensive ceasefire.
The statement said that the Taliban and all parties should fully engage in peace talks, agree on a comprehensive political settlement and ensure that Afghanistan does not become a safe haven for terrorists, while the Taliban laid down their arms on Eid al-Adha and pledged their commitment to the peace process.
